The Concrete Polishing Process: Step-by-Step

Here is the concrete polishing process we actually run in Kelowna, without the brochure version. The machine is loud, the early passes look worse than the floor you started with, and the shine shows up late.
1. Look at the slab before anyone plugs in
We walk it. Cracks, joints, coatings, oil, repairs, floor boxes, radiant heat, door heights. A moisture meter if a coating is even a maybe. A test grind in a corner tells us how hard the paste is and whether the aggregate is something you will like.
This is also when we protect the rest of the building. Plastic, tape, and a path for the hose. Polishing dust is fine and it travels.
2. Coarse metal grind
Metal-bond diamonds cut the surface. We might start at 16 or 30 grit if there is glue or a lip, or higher if the slab is already clean and we want to stay in the cream. Each pass removes the scratches from the coarser diamond. The floor looks scratched and flat. That is correct. Shine is not the point yet.
Edges get a hand grinder. If we skip them, you will see a border forever.
3. Densify
Once the floor is open, a lithium silicate densifier goes down. It reacts with the calcium hydroxide in the paste. The floor gets tighter and less dusty. We do not flood it and leave a crust. Excess gets worked in or removed so it does not haze the later passes.
4. Resin hone and polish
Resin pads step up through the grits. 100, 200, 400, then 800 and beyond if the spec calls for it. This is the long part, and it is where people get impatient and skip a grit. Skipping is why a floor looks shiny in a photo with the lights blown out and scratched in real daylight.
We stop at the sheen you agreed to. A kitchen does not need the same grit as a car showroom.
5. Burnish and guard
A burnisher with a high-grit pad tightens the reflection. A guard, if we use one, adds stain resistance you can renew. Then we clean, pull protection, and walk the floor with you under the real lights. Low morning light from a Kelowna window shows scratches that overhead LEDs hide. We would rather see them while the machine is still on site.
