Concrete Staining & Acid Dyeing in Kelowna

Acid stain versus dye
Acid stain is a reaction between metallic salts and the calcium in the concrete. The colour is variegated. You will see clouds, not a paint-store swatch. Earth tones, amber, soft black, and terra cotta are its honest range. It is permanent in the paste. You can only lighten it by grinding it off.
Dyes, especially acetone dyes, give a wider palette and a more even tone if the slab is consistent. They are the tool when a designer has a specific colour in mind. They still need a guard or a polish sequence over the top or they wear in the traffic lane.
Why your slab will not match the sample board
Stain reads the concrete it meets. A slab poured in August in Kelowna, hard-troweled, with a local mix, will not take colour like a sample that was made in a lab in March. We do a test patch in a closet or behind a future cabinet. That patch is the contract, not the brochure.
Patches, repairs, and different pours in the same room will stain differently. Sometimes that looks like a map you like. Sometimes it looks like a repair. If you need one even field, we skim an overlay first and stain that.
Where stain earns its keep
Basement suites, patios that are covered, retail feature walls that are actually floors, and houses that want the aggregate muted with colour. On a covered patio, a stain plus a breathable sealer handles Okanagan UV better than a solid paint that flakes.
Open driveways are a maybe. UV, salt, and tires are hard on any colour. We will stain a driveway if you want the look and you accept that exterior colour weathers. We will not sell it as a finish-and-forget surface.
Sealing the colour
Interior stained floors usually get densified and honed, or a low-build guard, so you can still feel concrete and not a plastic skin. Exterior and garage stains get a sealer matched to the exposure. A glossy acrylic on a sunny patio will scratch and need recoating. We pick the sheen you are willing to maintain.
Wax is a no. It traps dirt, it is slippery when you mop it, and it is the reason some stained floors from the 2000s look tired. A modern guard or a polish does the same visual job with less grief.

What's the difference between acid staining and concrete dyeing?
Acid staining uses a chemical reaction between the acid and lime in the concrete to create permanent, mottled, earth-tone colour. Acetone dyes penetrate deeply and offer a wider colour range with a more uniform look. Both are permanent once sealed — they don't peel or chip like paint.
Can concrete staining hide imperfections?
Staining actually enhances variation — patches, bug holes, and aggregate differences become part of the character. Clients who want a perfectly uniform look are better served by an overlay and dye combination.
